Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, with family by her side, Margaretha Martens, age 74, passed away Wednesday September 1, 2021, at the De Salaberry District Health Centre.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Timothy Wayne, Amanda Charlene (partner Luc), Johnnie Evan (Brenda), Rachel Carmel (Timothy). Her beautiful grandchildren Brett Riley (Rae), Cherise Nadine (Stephen), Jersey Shae, Morgan Rain & Emersyn Zoe, Judah Everett, Katura Symphony, Victoria Promise and Great granddaughter Naomi Palma Rey. Brothers and sisters, Jake (Helen), Katherina (Gunner), Frank, Anna (Dave), Elizabeth, Peter (Janice), Helen (Randy), Johnny, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her husband John Unrau, parents Jacob C and Elisabeth Martens, 2 Brothers, 1 Sister and a sister-in-law.

Margaretha married John Unrau July 20, 1968, in Steinbach MB. On March 27, 1977, John succumbed to his injuries due to a car accident. Margaretha was alone to care for her children Timothy and Amanda, and later finding she was carrying another. In honor of our dad, she named her baby boy, Johnnie. Mom found love once again and conceived her beautiful baby girl Rachel.

Mom was self-taught in many things; she had a natural artistic talent and was a meticulous seamstress, knitter, crocheter and could sketch portrait like photos like no other. Mom took pride in completing a project or task, to perfection. If it was not 100%, she was not happy with herself. Mom had many interests and could do anything she set her mind to. She paid attention to every detail and was her own worst critic. Mom was an avid gardener; she planned her garden well ahead of time and knew exactly when it was the right time to plant what, where and with what was complimentary or ‘played’ nice together. Her garden edges and rows needed to be precise and symmetrical. The last couple of years, mom was unable to garden as much but spoke of her gardening desires and love of it.

Mom left a strong legacy of strength to us kids. She was a fighter, and we believe it helped her fight though many physical problems. Mom was determined to be there for her grandbabies in ways she could not be there, (like most parents) for her own.

Mom had the softest heart imaginable. She defended the underdog- always. Right, or wrong she gave everyone the benefit of the doubt. Mom seemed totally incapable of watching suffering without at least speaking up.

Mom spent the last several months in the hospital. We managed to get her home for a couple of days to try have her rest and hopefully find strength in being home to get better. Her illness was too hard on her and mom then went to spend the remainder of her life at the De Salaberry District Health Centre. Very special thank you to all the thoughtful and supportive staff. The care she received there was above and beyond the call of duty and anything we expected. The love mom received from those will never be forgotten, YOU will never be forgotten.

The family extends their appreciation to the incredible love she received from Silver Lining Care. She was loved and welcomed with open arms, by all who cared for her.
