Shirley Merritt

January 22, 1948 — March 5, 2026

Shirley Merritt, born January 22, 1948 in Winnipeg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 5, 2026 at Bethesda Personal Care Home in Steinbach, Manitoba.

Shirley devoted her life to caring for others. A compassionate and deeply empathetic nurse, she spent her career serving those in need and offering comfort wherever she could. Her kindness extended far beyond her profession; helping others was simply who she was.

Shirley had a special place in her heart for both people and animals. She was actively involved with the The Salvation Army and was the founder of Friends Fundraising for Animal Shelters, an organization she started to support and advocate for animals in need. Her dedication and generosity touched many lives.

She shared a very close bond with her mother and found great comfort in that relationship throughout her life. Shirley is now reunited with her beloved mother.

Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her nephew Paul Merritt and his wife Alison, and their sons Andrew and Alexander Merritt.

She was predeceased by her parents Ken and Myrtle Merritt, her husband Sidney Gunn, and many beloved pets who brought her so much joy throughout her life.

Shirley will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her generous heart, and the countless ways she cared for others both human and animal.

In keeping with Shirley’s generous and caring nature, donations in her memory may be made to an animal charity of one’s choice or to the Fire Fighters Burn Fund Manitoba.
