Glen Lewis Bartel

December 28, 1928 — March 19, 2023

Glen Bartel, our father, reached safe harbour on March 19, 2023. He was born to Jac D and Elizabeth (Wiebe) Bartel on December 28, 1928, and enjoyed a happy secure childhood. He was the third child in a family of nine, also surrounded with cousins, uncles, and aunts which were very special to him. He accepted the Lord as his Saviour when he was fifteen and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ, embracing this faith to the end.

At seventeen he started spending winters working in lumber camps in Ontario and Alberta. On one of these winter logging ventures, he met the girl of his dreams, Susanna Boese, who became his wife on September 24, 1950, in Linden, Alberta. They settled on a farm half a mile from Grandpa Dan Boese in Linden. As a modern-day pioneer, they moved from Linden to help start the Edberg congregation and then twenty-two years later to Carrot River to help start another new congregation. The years in Edberg were good years, raising a family, establishing friendships and farming grain and cattle. The thirty-four years in Carrot River completed his farming career, they moved off the farm and built a retirement home near the school and church. The grandpa and grandma years were precious. He dearly loved his grandchildren, rocking the babies and watching them grow from toddlers to teenagers. The children loved to use the path he cleared through the woods from their house to the church and school.

The Lord took Mom home in 2011 leaving Dad very lonely. In 2015 he moved to Maplewood Manor in Steinbach bringing him back to just a few miles from where he was born. His example of accepting the different stages of life graciously is an inspiration to all of us. His response to “How are you?” was almost always, “I’m fine.”

The staff and residents at Maplewood became like family; we are so grateful to them for this. He received wonderful care there. To you special people in the community who reached out to Dad; we thank you.

Yes, the lines have fallen into us in pleasant places and we have a goodly heritage.

He leaves behind three sons: Clint and Rita (Enderby, BC), Bruce and Becky (Carrot River, SK), Rod and Kiley (Blind Bay, BC). Three daughters: Colleen and Mark Toews (Cromer, MB), Jeannie and David Isaac (Carrot River, SK), Glenda and Lyndon Isaac (Birnie, MB) and daughter-in-law, Jackie Bartel (Prince George, BC). 16 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren.  Also, three sisters: Clarice Thiessen, Dorothy and John Burns, Dianna and Denton Friesen; sister-in-law Mary Anne Bartel; brother-in-law Linden and Alice Wohlgemuth and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Susanna, two granddaughters Tannis and Heidi Bartel, three brothers (including two in infancy) and four sisters.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30am on Friday, March 24, 2023, at the Carrot River Church of God in Christ. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Those unable to attend may join via Livestream.  Interment will be at Battle Heights Cemetery followed by a reception and sharing of memories at the church.
